Unit 05 Grammar Lesson: Estar
In this unit, the focus is on the verb: estar.
In Spanish, there are two verbs for the verb "to be", one of the verbs for "to be" is the verb ser. but in this lesson, we'll focus only on the other verb: estar.
Estar is generally used when we describe our condition at this moment, how we feel now, and it is also used to say where we are.
We also use it to describe what we are doing at the moment. It is part of a tense called the present progressive or present continous. In this unit, you will see a few examples of that, but in a future unit, we will focus solely on the present progressive.
Examples:
Estoy enfermo = I am sick
Estoy en la cafetería = I’m a the cafeteria
Ella está cansada = She is tired
Estamos en la casa = We are at home
Estoy cocinando = I’m cooking
Estoy durmiendo = I’m sleeping
Now, there are some other usages for estar, but for now, this is what we will focus on in this unit.
Conjugation
Estar is considered an irregular verb, and here is how it is conjugated:
Yo estoy
Tú estás
Él, ella, usted está
Nosotros estamos
Vosotros estáis
(you guys, only in Spain)
Vos estás
(You, singular, informal in countries like Argentina, Uruguay, El Salvador and others)
